US Poker Sites – Online Poker For US Players

US Poker Sites

The US online poker market has had a tumultuous history with many ups and downs. From its' beginnings in the early 2000's, the market has seen the rise and fall of a ton of poker sites, including big names like Paradise Poker and Party Poker which historically dominated the market and were some of the first sites online in the United States market.

These days, the market while popular is much smaller, especially in terms of which sites still accept US poker players.  Gone are the days of 20+ options for Americans, but thankfully there are still a handful of reputable poker rooms open for business in the USA.  Below we've provided a summary and some highlights from quality sites that remain available for real money poker in the US.

Here is my list of the best and most trusted US poker sites for 2020:

  1. BetOnline Poker
  2. Ignition Poker
  3. SportsBetting Poker
  4. Bovada Poker
  5. Americas Cardroom
  6. Black Chip Poker
  7. Intertops Cardroom

#1 – Bet Online Poker

BetOnline Poker

BetOnline Poker offers players from all over the world an opportunity to play on some of the softest cash tables and in some of the most beatable poker tournaments available anywhere on the Internet. BetOnline Pokers tables are full of part-time recreational poker players due to the popularity of the site’s sports betting and horse racing operations. It’s like going back in a time machine to 2006!

#2 – Ignition Poker

Ignition Poker

Ignition Poker started life as a high-quality online casino. It now also provides an excellent online poker platform compatible with Windows, Mac, and mobile devices. The site offers a 100% first deposit poker bonus (no Ignition Poker bonus code required), plus – if you deposit with Bitcoin – you can also take advantage of unlimited 100% casino bonuses. The site also has a terrific rewards program through which players can receive cashback, free casino chips and entry into valuable prize draws.

#3 – SB Poker

SportsBetting Poker

Despite the sites obvious focus on sports betting, offers plenty of opportunities for players to enjoy a potentially lucrative poker experience. A valuable 100% first deposit bonus up to $1,000 is complemented by some excellent leaderboard-style promotions and a stack of micro buy-ins and freeroll poker tournaments. Cash game players will find the tables relatively soft compared to some other sites. In addition to being USA friendly, is also Mac friendly!

#4 – Bovada Poker

Bovada Poker

Bovada Poker is the flagship poker room for the Pai Wang Luo Poker Network – an international Network that provides players with action at the tables around-the-clock. If you have never played at the site before, you can take advantage of a poker bonus up to $500 (with no specific Bovada Poker bonus code required), plus additional bonuses at the sites sportsbook and online casino, and weekly rebates on your horseracing action.

#5 – Americas Cardroom

Americas Cardroom

Americas Cardroom has been around since many of us first started playing online poker, but it is as sound and reliable as always. The site is targetted specifically towards US players and offers a generous 100% up to $1000 signup bonus for all new real money players. In addition to the great bonus, ACR Poker also boasts the largest guaranteed tournaments on a weekly basis for US players.

#6 – Black Chip Poker

Black Chip Poker

Black Chip Poker is on the Winning Poker network and shares the same player database and promotions as Americas Cardroom. The only difference is the skin itself. Try this one if you prefer a black environment. That’s all there is to it. The Winning Poker Network currently is one of the biggest in player traffic among US facing poker rooms and networks. The action is generally plentiful no matter at what time you choose to log on and play.

#7 – Intertops Poker

Intertops Poker

Intertops Poker has been around since many of us first started playing online poker, but it is as sound and reliable as always. The bonus may not be spectacular, but it is one of the easiest for new poker players to clear and is complemented by a lucrative rewards program that is both challenging and achievable. No native Mac support (but instant play), but there is still plenty to like about Intertops Poker. It has an excellent reputation for player security, customer support and swift cashouts.

There Are Some US Poker Sites That Should Be Avoided

Unfortunately, not all poker sites operate in players best interests or have unfair terms and conditions. Players with long memories will remember the way in which Full Tilt Poker misused player funds to support the extravagant lifestyles of the sites owners; while more recent cases of sites stealing players funds include Lock Poker and Full Flush Poker. I am also wary of online poker clubs that use the agent system to organize real money games on play money apps.

Avoid This Site

Global Poker operates using a “sweepstakes” system in which players effectively buy play money and have the equivalent of real money added to their accounts. There are many complaints about Global Poker on Reddit and poker forums. I have concerns about playing at this site with regards to some of the terms and conditions and other things I found – specifically issues with payment options, limits on withdrawals, and data security. You can read more about these concerns in my Global Poker review.

Often there are tell-tale signs that a site is not operating in players best interests. These may be players complaining of delayed payments on poker forums or social media, or payment processors withdrawing their services from a poker site – as in the case of PayPal withdrawing its services from Global Poker. I would suggest you limit your online action to the trusted online poker sites mentioned above and frequently visit my news pages for any further news about poker sites to avoid.

Current US Online Poker Legislation Status In 2020

US Poker Laws

The US online poker landscape has changed quite a bit over the past few years and has been regulated in a number of American states. While that’s the case, most of the better options still remain offshore and will for the foreseeable future due to slow bureaucracy in regulation.

At present, there are 4 US states that operate Government regulated poker sites, which include Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania.  Outside of those four states, the only options are some of the offshore sites you’re probably already familiar with like Bovada and Bet Online.

Within the regulated states, the best options for sites include, 888 Poker and PokerStars.  Pokerstars will likely become the biggest in the US and has the best software, player volume and promotions of the three.

While that’s the case, we think that the offshore sites will reign supreme for quite a while to come, particularly due to player volumes since there are not enough liquidity agreements across regulated states to meet demand for games.  This is a major problem with the regulated market and will prevent them from overtaking the offshore sites for quite a long time.

Because of that fact, we still recommend looking to the offshore sites which have better bonuses, more players and allow for cryptocurrency withdrawals like Bitcoin as well as other more discreet ways to keep playing online. You can find the best sites per state using our table below and clicking your state.

Yes you can. You just need to download one of the poker apps from the sites you want to play at, or simple use the mobile version of their website to enable play from phone.

Although there have been events in which players have lost money due to fraud and mismanagement, the sites featured on have a long history of keeping player deposits secure and paying out on time. Is there any chance of getting a computer virus from poker software?

This is highly unlikely, but not impossible due to the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals. I recommend taking the same precautions as you would for any online transaction. Keep your anti-virus software up to date, make sure patches and updates are applied as soon as they are available, use a unique password and never reveal it to anybody.

Why do so many sites encourage players to deposit using Bitcoin?

Since the passage of UIGEA in 2006, some banks and payment processors have become apprehensive about handling online gambling transactions. This can cause delays with deposits clearing and withdrawals being processed. It can also mean charges are applied when you want to cash out. Bitcoin transactions do not have these issues. You can find out why on my page about Bitcoin poker.

Do I have to pay tax on my winnings from online poker?

In the United States, players are required to declare their profits from playing poker. Different procedures apply depending on whether you are filing as a professional player or as a recreational player, so it is always in your best interests to maintain a log of your profits and losses and seek professional financial advice in relation to your personal tax circumstances.

Why is the volume of traffic at US poker sites an important consideration?

Most online poker bonuses are “redeemable” bonuses that are valid for a certain length of time. The fastest way to redeem a poker bonus is to play cash games. This means there must be other players to play against. The more traffic a US poker site attracts, the more likely it is there will be plenty of cash game action, and you will be able to redeem your bonus in the time allowed.

Are PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker Or Party Poker Coming Back to the USA?

PokerStars and Party Poker have already come back in some of the regulated states like New Jersey, and will likely be available countrywide as states introduce new legislation regulating online poker. For now, they are only available in very few states so we still recommend the offshore sites for the best poker playing experience.
